Live Music in Plymouth: A Guide to the Venues

Plymouth's music scene punches above its weight, spread across a handful of venues that each do something different.

Plymouth Pavilions

The city's largest indoor venue, hosting touring arena acts, comedy and family shows. Capacity is around four thousand standing. It is a ten-minute walk from the city centre and has its own car park, which fills quickly on show nights.

The Depo

A converted space that has become the home of larger club nights and dance music in the city, hosting national drum and bass, house and techno names alongside local promoters. Late licence, and the sound system is the reason people travel for it.

Steel Brew, Royal William Yard

The taproom in the historic Mills Bakery runs one of the busiest live programmes in the city — tribute acts, ska and soul nights, monthly stand-up comedy, and free acoustic sessions most Sunday afternoons. Waterfront setting, and the beer is brewed on site.

The Junction and the grassroots circuit

Plymouth's smaller venues carry the local scene: original bands, touring underground acts and open mic nights. These rooms are where most Plymouth bands start, and entry is usually a few pounds on the door.

Free live music

Royal William Yard's Yard Sessions run through the summer in the Secret Garden at no charge, and several Barbican and Yard pubs put on weekend afternoon sets. The Box has run free Friday evening music through August.

Festivals

Summer brings larger outdoor events to Home Park and the waterfront, and the city's free events calendar — the Firework Championships, Seafest, the West End Carnival — usually includes live stages.
