Christmas in Plymouth: The Complete Guide

Plymouth does Christmas properly: a full-scale market in the city centre, an outdoor ice rink, festive markets on the waterfront and a National Trust house dressed for the season.

Plymouth Christmas Market

The city centre market runs along Armada Way from late November to just before Christmas, with over a hundred wooden chalets selling crafts, gifts and street food. Entry is free. It is busiest on Saturdays and in the final week before Christmas; weekday mornings are far calmer.

Winter Wonderland ice rink

Central Park hosts the city's outdoor ice rink from late November through to early January. Sessions are ticketed and book up in the run-up to Christmas and over the school holidays, so buy ahead for weekend slots.

Royal William Yard Christmas Markets

A different atmosphere entirely — Wednesday evening and Sunday afternoon markets in the Yard's historic buildings, with dozens of South West makers, food producers and independent traders. Free to browse, and the waterfront setting after dark is the draw.

Christmas at Saltram

The National Trust dresses Saltram House for an eighteenth-century Christmas, with a family trail through the gardens. Admission applies; National Trust members go free.

Santa at the Aquarium

The National Marine Aquarium runs Santa dives through December, with Father Christmas appearing in the main tank alongside the sharks and rays. Included with standard admission.

Practical notes

City-centre parking is heavily pressured through December — park and ride is the sensible option on market weekends. Most attractions close on Christmas Day, and many reopen with reduced hours between Christmas and New Year.
