Plymouth in a Day: A Walking Itinerary

Plymouth's highlights sit close together and mostly along the water, which makes a single day on foot genuinely workable. This route runs roughly six kilometres with plenty of stops.

Morning: The Box

Start at The Box on Tavistock Place, a short walk from the station and the city centre. It is free, opens at ten, and gives you the city's history before you go and look at it. Allow ninety minutes.

Late morning: the city centre and market

Walk south through the post-war city centre — one of the most complete examples of 1950s reconstruction planning in Britain — and cut into Plymouth Market for coffee and a look at the produce stalls. Armada Way runs straight down towards the sea.

Midday: Plymouth Hoe

Continue to the Hoe for the view across the Sound, Smeaton's Tower and the Naval Memorial. If it is summer and you have brought a towel, Tinside Lido is directly below. Lunch options cluster at the eastern end.

Afternoon: the Barbican

Drop down from the Hoe into the Barbican, the oldest surviving part of the city. Walk the cobbled lanes, see the Mayflower Steps and the harbour, and consider a tour at the Black Friars Distillery. Fish and chips on the quayside is the traditional move.

Late afternoon: Royal William Yard

Either walk the waterfront path west (about forty minutes, with good views at Devil's Point and Firestone Bay) or take a bus or taxi. The Yard's restored naval buildings hold restaurants, galleries and a brewery taproom, and the light there in the early evening is the best in the city.

Evening

Eat at the Yard, or head back into the centre for the Pavilions, the Theatre Royal or one of the live music venues. Check what's on before you travel — the city's events calendar is busiest between May and September and again through December.
