Gillian Ayres: A Life in Colour explores the life, work and legacy of one of Britain’s most influential abstract painters. The exhibition brings together 26 paintings spanning seven decades, tracing Ayres’ bold use of colour, energetic brushwork and continual experimentation. Works range from early pieces to paintings created during the years she lived on the North Devon and North Cornwall border, where the landscape and rural environment became an important source of inspiration. Ayres was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1989, elected to the Royal Academy in 1991 and appointed CBE in 2011. Entry to The Box is free, with advance booking encouraged for priority access.
